- Break Down Your Writing into 15-Minute Sessions: If you're like me, there are days you find it hard to get motivated to write, especially when life gets in the way. So, setting aside 15-minute intervals can really help. Whether it's first thing in the morning after you've gotten ready for the day or on your lunch break or at night when everyone is in bed. Take a timer, set it for 15 minutes, and write for those 15 minutes. When the buzzer sounds, STOP.
- Limit Social Media Scrolling to Free Up Extra Time: You know when you're sitting on your couch, scrolling on Facebook or TikTok just letting your brain have a moment of nothingness so you can zone out for a while? Yeah, me, too. It's wonderful, isn't it? Anyway, instead of using that free time for social media, use it to write, edit, or revise your manuscript. If you have free time to scroll, you have free time to do what needs to be done for your writing. Believe me, I'm talking to myself here, too. So don't be like, "Alicia, who you talking to?" Because I'm preaching to the choir.
- Set a Daily Word Count Goal and Stick To It: Another way to help you with getting your ideas down on paper is to set a word count each day and stick to it. Whether it's 100, 500, or 2000 words, write them, and when you reach that daily goal, STOP. Don't write anymore or any less than that set goal. Trust me, it helps.
- Turn Your Commute into Brainstorming or Dictation Time: I use my notes app on my iPhone for this a lot. If I'm driving or out and about and an idea hits me. I voice to text that sucker so I'll have it for later. I have to save my ideas because if I don't, I'll surely forget them.
- Schedule Writing Blocks on Your Calendar Like Appointments: I've done this before. I have put a time down on my phone calendar that said TIME TO WRITE. Sometimes it's a necessary evil. Just put it on whatever calendar you use for appointments and put down WRITING, so that way you'll make the time if any other way doesn't work for you. Make that appointment and keep it!
